Managing feeds from other network members

Different control for different kinds of network members

In the CityTools news and classified networks there are two types of members: publishers and suppliers.

All networks contain at least one publishing member and many networks consist solely of other publishers.

However, networks open to the public might contain suppliers of content who are not publishers. Since the demands for managing information are different for both groups, there at two sets of tools.

Please note that any changes you make to control incoming information will only take effect on newly uploaded content. Existing content that you have not downloaded will not be affected.

Managing feeds from other publishers

There are two primary options for controlling feeds from other publishers, both of them can be found on the My Nets page and clicking on the "ignore or block publishing members" link, which opens a page in which you will see other members of your network who are publishers.

Tip
Clicking the "show details" link beneath each publisher name will provide you with additional information about that publisher.

There are three clickable options presented for each publisher:
  • block -- if you click this, this publisher will not get your content in the future, even though the publisher will get other network content. Once you "block" a publisher, you can "unblock" them if you wish to permit them to get your content again.
  • ignore -- if you click this, none of this publisher's content will be included in downloads you receive even though you'll get other network content. Once you have ignored a publisher, you can "un-ignore" that publisher later if you decide to receive content from them.
  • send msg -- this opens up a tool that allows you to send a message to this publisher.

Managing feeds from suppliers of info

If your network permits non-publishing members to submit information to the network, you might want to control how you receive this information.

To do so, head over to the My Nets" page and scroll down to the network you want to work with.

The network's panel contains two primary tools to control information coming from suppliers (non-publishers) of information:
  • limit downloads by metro area -- click this link to open a pop-up window. You'll find the window defaults to your metro area (if you are in the United States). If you click the "set filter to this metro area" you will only receive content from suppliers who are in the selected metro area.

Once you have enabled a geographic filter, you may disable it at any time by returning to this page and clicking "remove filter."

If the default metro area is not the one you want, enter a zip code from your desired metro area to change areas.
  • only accept downloads from specific suppliers -- click this link to open a window with a list of public suppliers for a given network on the left side.

Click on the name of any suppliers you want to include in your downloads. When you click on the names, you'll see them move to the right side of window where your list of approved suppliers can be found.

If want to remove a name from your approved list, click on it again and it will return to the general public pool.

If there are no non-publishing members of your network, the window will indicate this.

Tip on managing feeds from public suppliers!
By default your downloads will include all members of your network. Using the above tools changes this behavior and you will get only those public feeds that you expressly permit.
