Choose a membership approach that matches you needs

There are three network membership styles on CityTools. You may freely switch between them at any time.
  • Invitation only -- these networks are only open to people to whom you have given your secret membership passcode. (more on passcodes)
  • Accept membership requests -- these networks appear in the publicly viewable "Join Nets" page, but no one can join without your permission. The application requests for this kind of network appear in the Messages page.
  • Open -- These networks appear in the "Join Nets" page and may be joined by any member of the system.

How to select or change membership style

You must select a membership approach when initially creating a network.

To change this choice at any time go to the Management page, find the network you want to change and click the "edit" link. That open up a form that will allow you change the network membership style to anything you like.

Changing network membership styles does not affect existing members.

Reasons you might want to change membership style

It might be that to encourage sign-ups you create a network that is fully open. Once you have gathered up enough members, you might close the network (this doesn't affect the status of existing members) so that only people you invite can join in the future.

Alternatively, you might want to create a network that accepts membership requests because such networks are visible to the world. That way, you have indicated your interest in sharing with others, and who knows what interesting relationships might be spawned in this way.
