Network Administrators â create your network categories
previous page
If you created a network, you must now create a ânetwork category mapâ that you and all other members will use.
On the âMapsâ page
you'll see a panel for each network you belong to. In the panel for the network you created, you'll find a link that says âplease create network categoriesâ -- click that.
This takes you to a page where you may enter the network categories that everyone on your network will use.
Important: only enter one category per line in the entry box!
Because the network categories are shared by all members, as the administrator you should give some thought to making sure the network categories are as detailed as possible without becoming too unwieldy.
In general, it's best to err on the side of more detail rather than less. However, unless you're sure that all members of your network will be in the same geographic area, beware of creating too many geo-specific categories.
Please note:
The category mapping functions are flat and do not support sub-categories right now. Doing so would make the entire mapping exercise insanely complicated.
Besides, a parent-category/child-category approach is really a matter of presentation and as such if we get things assigned to the right child category then you can roll them up into whatever parents you choose on your end.
Of course, newspapers are experts at categorizing things and the odds are you've got all the information and skill necessary to make a perfect list.
If you have a list of your own classified categories â a great way to start â with one category per line, feel free to cut and paste that list into the category box. Otherwise if you want, just type directly into the window.
If you would like for CityTools to recommend some categories, notice the button below the category box that says âLoad Template.â Click that and we'll fill the box with some example categories â many people find these are good enough to use in a production network.
Feel free to edit the template categories in any way you like.
Once you are satisfied with your network categories, click the âsaveâ button and you'll be taken to the
a place where you can tell us a little about how your data is organized.
