I'm a non-drinker, but when I drank, I liked wine. Be that as it may, this list is for my friend Brad, who loves wine. it's culled from the top 100 wines of 2006 list from Wine Spectator.

If other people want, they can link their personal lists -- or the top picks of other publications to this one and we'll end up with a nice consensus.

1Casanova di neri Brunello Di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova -- $70

This wine had better be good with a name like that...

By the way, the entire Wine Spectator article -- with 90 more wines -- is linked off this title. On the rest of the items below, I'm linking to relevant resources.

2Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Washington 2003 -- $85

Washington rocks. I love the place. Everything about Washington rocks. So it's not surprising that their rough-and-ready wine industry winds up with the second spot on the Wine Spectator list...

3Chateau Leoville Barton St. Julien 2003 -- $75

OK, I know. I'm a wine punk. Hell I don't even drink it. I'm just putting up this list for my wine crazy friends (and I've got LOTS of those...)

But, when you see something like this in a review (linked above): "Explosive nose of black raspberry, coffee and leather..." I'm thinking, "damn man, that IS an explosive nose. Raspbery AND leather. Whoa. And I didn't even know noses could explode...."

I want to BE the guy who can write stuff like that!

4Concha Y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Puente Alto Don Melchor 2003 -- $47

This is a Chilean wine and based on what people tell me, Chile is really doing great things with wine.

5Domain Du Pegau Chateauneuf-du-pape Cuvee Reservee 2003 -- $70

Based on the comments from the links on this page, it appears that this wine is a solid winner.

At least people actually drink it. I once worked with this larcenous cretin who fancied himself quite the wine connoiseur. Unfortunately, he only evaluated wine by price and made a big deal out of that. What a goon...

Let your own palate tell the tale.

6Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey Sauternes 2003 -- $45

The link here is to a wine shopping site -- but the reason I use it is because I wa checking to see if prices have gone up after the Wine Spectator list appeared.

Not much.

In this brave new world we stand astride, California wines now cost more than great great wines. Cool!

7Kosta Browne Pino Noir Russian River Valley 2004 -- $38

Small is beautiful and here is another small Northern California winery.

What's not to like about this? Buy from the little guys, root for the underdog, fight for the craftspeople of the world.

How hard is that?

8Kongsgaard Chardonnay Napa Valley 2003 -- $75

I love the label for this wine and love the fact that it's made by fifth generation Napa wine-makers even better. It's almost enough to get me to buy a bottle...

9Brancaia Toscana Il Blu 2004 -- $70

Another Italian wine... Ah, those Italians. But I like their bikes better....

10Two Hands Shiraz Barossa Valley Bella's Garden 2004 -- $50

This is an Australian wine -- and Australian vineyards are coming on strong. I was there last summer and saw a number of vineyards that looked like they might have been right out of Sonoma county...
