Ryan McGuigan, a guard on the Branson school boys basketball team, was a little nervous when he was informed of his defensive assignment going into the North Coast Section Division V high school championship on Saturday.
Lick-Wilmerding's Marcus Wells scored 37 points in the semifinal and McGuigan drew the assignment of slowing him down.
McGuigan held Lick's star to just 12 points and still found time to lead everyone with 17 points of his own, guiding the Bulls to their fifth consecutive section title with a 45-33 victory at College of Marin.
"I was a little nervous but I was more fired up that nervous," McGuigan said. "I knew if I held him to under his average, or in the teens, we'd have a good shot."
