Updated: Links to use CityTools in different languages

more from san francisco bay area
Folks, we're still assembling documentation on how the multiple languages work -- and yes, we're aware that some translations need work and we are working on it.

In any event, here is a quick version of how to use CityTools in multiple languages.

If you're not a member and just want to see if we've got stories in your language look at the left menu bar and select "extras>>languages>>your language." To change back to English, just go to the languages menu and select English.

Remember it's a community site, so if no one has posted content in your language, there won't be stories.

If you're a member and you want to use the site in a bilingual manner, just go to "account>>your profile" and set your primary and secondary language to whatever you want.

Prompts will appear in your primary language, but you'll see content in both languages.

Bear in mind the multiple language support is very new, so there might not be stories in all languages, although some beta testers have been working with it for a week or so already.

If you set your account up as bilingual, when you're writing a story, sharing a story or writing a list, you'll have a new prompt on the form to select which of your two languages the story is in.

The prompt will default to your primary language. If the story is in your secondary language, just select that.

Please be aware that while most of the core pages are in all the languages, we're still rolling it out to error messages and support/help pages.

Also, we're aware that some of the translations need to be tweaked and we're working on that.

If you simple want to read CityTools in a specific language and don't want to join us (why not???) You'll find links to each language page in the resource box to the right of this story.

More formal documentation is coming soon!

YAAY!!! This is so awesome. Congrats to the CT team.

You people think about all this in ways that no one else does.

Bob if you see this, are there plans to allow people to read write in more than one language?

I mean since you're supporting so many languages and there are tri-linguagl people, you could do it, right?

Alice, you're right. We could allow you to read in all the languages at once. We decided to limit it to two at first for interface reasons.

If it turns out that there is a real interest in a tri-lingual, quad-lingual, x-lingual version, we'll certainly deliver it.

OK, it's cool.

But I see a probelm.

When they're making a story, if people don't set their languages right are we going to start seeing Swedish in the English version of the site????

You guys need to add something that will allow us to flag a story as being in the wrong language.

We *suspect* most people will make a point of assigning a story to the proper language, but you're right it's a potential problem.

Frankly, it's kind of an unknown because to the best of our knowledge no one has attempted this before.

It if turns out to be a problem, we'll add an option to flag stories posted in the wrong language. Thanks for the comment!
