Negotiators were closing in on a deal today that would settle legal claims by more than 500 victims of alleged sexual abuse by clergy in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

If all parties agree, the total could exceed $650 million, by far the largest of any settlement arising from the 5-year-old clergy abuse scandal.
