County sheriff's officials launched the search about 8 p.m. after a caller reported that a hiker was about four hours late from returning from a hike in the Sky Oaks open space area above Fairfax.

There was no report on the hiker's identity.

As the search continued into the night, a Sonoma County sheriff's helicopter, Henry 1, was called in to help.
